MLN Status: Reported but NO Confirmation
Field reports only, no publication or confirmed laboratory results
First report: 2013. (FAO, 2014). Based on this report and map MLN was considered to be present in 4 distributed localities in southern South Sudan in 2013. [NB: No reports have appeared in the scientific literature regarding MLN in South Sudan]
2015:
Feb 2015: A regional team (ASARECA, the University of Nairobi, the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO) and Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Cooperatives and Rural Development of the Republic of South Sudan) conducted a survey across Magwi and Torit Counties in the Eastern Equatoria State; and Ikotos and Juba Counties in the Central Equatoria State.
From the 59 samples taken, maize samples with typical MLN symptoms were found. These will be subjected to confirmation from the laboratory analysis. However, symptoms, disease incidence and severity appeared moderate. Presence of vectors was also noted but in low populations.
2016:
None of the collected field samples from 2015 surveys have tested positive for MCMV (ASARECA pers comm)
