Leaf sampling for MLN surveillance

Survey Protocols and Survey Forms

Standardised survey and sampling protocols for MLN have been developed by CIMMYT and partners. Field surveys have been designed to collect accurate data on the presence of MCMV throughout major maize growing areas – both farmer fields and seed production fields. Recommended field survey methodology focuses on in-situ leaf sampling, coupled to Agristrip testing with confirmation through ELISA testing. Seed sampling is coupled to ELISA testing. All surveys, both field and seed are geo-referenced. The aim is to collect standardised information on the distribution of MLN to serve as a regional resource for planning and control.

Survey Forms

Standardised survey forms have been developed by CIMMYT and national partners for MLN field surveys and also seed collection surveys. Both surveys have been implemented in electronic format using ODK (Electronic survey solutions for Android devices are available for download), but paper versions of survey forms can be downloaded from this page. Paper survey forms should be used in combination with a GPS. Guidelines for use of GPS are also included for download:
